back again

hi

i am still in castres. Dominique has a very sore toe. We are going to wait a few hours before we start this morning. ( his toe is really sore.)

We stayed in a dormitory for young people who are working but can't afford housing on their own. it cost us 12e for bed and breakfast.

Castres is a town i would come back to (if i spoke French). it is an old town where fabrics were designed. there is a river with several old bridges and old homes along the river. there is an enormous plaza with fountains and bars surrounding it. the other town i loved was arles, where i began walking. it was a roman outpost. there is a colliseum and an amphitheatre that are still being used, happily for less brutal entertainment. arles is a very small town; so the colliseum and theatre are imposing. i think it is also a tourist town. there were many beautiful stores and places to eat. the first area we walked in was carmargue. it is known for it's beautiful white horses. the whole area has a cowboy, western feel. there were many cattle and horses and wrought iron crosses. speaking of crosses, they are everywhere. some are simple and beautiful, others not so much. i keep thinking how oppressive it would feel if you weren,t christian. the really bad part were the mosquitoes. they were horrible. i thought provence was perfect, but no.

from the cattle area we walked into orchards: apricots and necterines primarily. we ate the ones on the ground. yum. from there we went up up up into the chestnut forests and pines. the chestnuts were very important in ancient times for flour and protein etc. i was thinking last night about telling you about the hunters in the woods. it was one of those times when i thought what am i doing here. their are men with guns in the dark and i guess there must have been wild boar. and their was mary daniels and her backpack and her cute little scarf. good lord.

the other time i had this feeling was the day after i wrote to you from lodeve. dominique and i got really lost. we walked out of town in the wrong direction. we are following a national hiking trail that is marled with a red and white design. it doesn,t specify direction. we walked on an ancient roman trail for 3 hours and we met a man who pointed across the valley at the road we were supposed to be on. i of course have no idea what is being talked about, but suddenly we are walking very quickly with this man and his two dogs. after about an hour we arrive at his car, the dogs, backpacks and dominique get in the wayback and i am in the front seat with this very handsome man. he looks like big from sex in the city. we are driving through woods and villages and i thought how did it happen that i am here? the man looked at me and said this is the dogs car. he could speak great english and so i started talking with him. it is such a good feeling to be able to talk with someone. i am so sorry i dont speak french. dominique is giving me lessons as we walk. we spend our time walking drawing pictures in the dirt to discribe what we are talking about and singing christmas songs because they are common to both of us.

i am thinking about what is important to me on this pilgrimage. for me it doesn't feel religous. it feels spiritual in the way being outside always feels spiritual to me. the most dominate feeling i have is one of being healthy. my heart races with the effort, i sweat and drink gallons of water: all of my aches and pains that i had at home are gone. i feel so good. maybe later i will feel the pilgrimage in a more spiritual way. i do have a deep respect for the history of the way and the thousands that have gone before me.

dominique is sitting next to me, anxious to start. goodbye again.

Love,

mom and Mary

Hi, Mary,

Holy Cow, you're moving right along! Thanks for the updates. I am wondering what you weather is like. Have you had much rain? I heard that Europe was experiencing torrential rains, but the report I heard were not specific, except for the terrible fires in Greece. I am so happy that you have someone to travel with that speaks the language, and keeps you safe.

I hope your day was wonderful, and that Dominic's toe is better.

I just checked the my international clocks gadget and it is 10PM there. It's noon here. That helps me place in the universe.
Will you be going through Lourdes? I don't see it on your map, but it seems from another map that it would be close, after Toulouse. If so say "Hi" to the Blessed Virgin for me and tell her I'm sorry about the Minnehaha Falls thing.

Sweet Dreams, and don't let the bedbugs bite!

Love,

Maggie Rose

Mary, I'm just reading your updates now and it's 9:00 pm on 8/27 (Monday). I'm feeling your presence and miss you (as I said I would). It's that spirituality piece! And, of course, we both know what you're doing over there with your scarf!! Keep going girl...I'm pulling for you! Is Dominic taking care of his toes properly? And take good care of your toes/feet. Lots of Love..GIN

What a treat-- a post two days in a row! It sounds like you have really hit your stride both figuritively and literally. So you'll know french when you get back.
Alison and Adam were over for Sahkeena's 14th birthday. Oscar wasn't feeling well, so he and Erika stayed home. We missed them, but it was great celebrating and discussing upcoming (and past) high school experiences. Alison and Adam can still remember.
Thanks for the details on your adventure--sounds so fabulous, but I enjoy the hurried posts, too-- just to know where you are. I pictured you moving so fast, that you would have no time to savor. But I guess there is plenty of time to savor at a waking pace.
I am not surprised your body is cooperating so well on this adventure; do you think maybe your fitness level might be a little above average? I am so excited for you, I just want to finish every sentence with an exclamtion point!!!
Love!!!! Barb!!!

Hi Mary,
So nice to read about your journey. You are amazing! But we always knew that. So glad that you met Dominic so that you have someone with you and could continue. I certainly could never have made such a trek--we will have to get the 5 ex-pres' together so we can see your photos and get more details. How does a spa sound about now? Be well. Love Patsy

hi mary

your pilgrimage sounds really interesting and rewarding so far. today erika and oscar and i went to the state fair. oscar had quite a bit of fun. we rode in a cable car over the fairgrounds, and on a merry-go-round for the first time. oscar went through a farmhand simulation where he got to pretend to be a farmer. he looks forward to going with you next year.
oscar has a message for you:
"only seawolf bites that dog, nonna!"

we miss you and look forward to the completion of your momentous achievement,

benji

Bon soir, Marie! Buenos tardes, Maria! - The kids and I are just back from our trip to Paris. Great fun, VERY rainy. I already miss my morning pain au chocolat, and if I had stayed another week I probably would have taken up cigarettes (a staple of French breakfasts, as far as I can tell). I can relate to your wishing you could speak French. I spent some time w/the Rosetta Stone program before we left, and it did help a tiny bit.

My God, you are an adventurous and brave woman! Good for you for continuing your trek. I'm very sorry for your friends, who must be sorely disappointed. I love reading your descriptions of the terrain and towns, and your reflections about life. I look forward to reading much more. Oh - people who are not Christian are pretty used to seeing crosses everywhere.

Could you please try to find TWO handsome Frenchmen next time? I'd so appreciate it -

Connie

Hi Mary,
I am so sorry I missed your calls today. I am in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and keep thinking of you. I miss you so much and wish I could be with you. In fact I am going to see if I can manage join you for a week or two at the end of your trip. I am afraid you'll be in such good shape by then that I wiil never be able to keepup.
I was wondering around today looking for a place to hike and came upon a small museum , and old home of Robert Frost. It was lovely to walk in his woods. I can only imagine how you feel walking in places with so many more layers of history. Keep calling. I'll keeep my phone on me and the sound on too.
Love, Barb

hi mom!

I love to read your updates and also all the comments from your loving friends. I can't believe how far you have gone already...what an accomplishment. We are going camping up north this weekend so I won't be able to answer my phone. I hope to talk to you again soon. We all miss you, especially Oscar who talks about you all the time. You ride motorcycles, trucks and even fire trucks past our house everyday. You are also still hiding under a potted plant in the bathroom according to Oscar's wild imagination. have fun and remember that this is supposed to be hard at least some of the time!

Dear Mary,

I hope that you continue to see birds on your journey. A raven kept on cawing at me when I spent an extra night alone after the Vision Quest. Then I saw him majestically fly into the evening light. They are all about magic. About how to bring magic into our lives. It sounds as if you are doing just that!

I finished reading Harry Potter this weekend. Once I had started the book, I did not want to stop. J.K.Rowling does a nice job of ending the series of books.
I can’t tell you how it ends, that will be for you to learn.

Greetings to Dominic.

I love you, sweet sister Mary.

Dear Mary,

It was great to hear from you and to know that you are fine. What a wonderful experience you had with Dominique and the lesson about never being alone. I am so happy that the abbey showed up and the women who encouraged you. Isn’t it the biggest lesson to learn to trust? You are in my heart and my prayers every day. I love that Dominique prayed to St. Anthony to find his good toe.

A cardinal came to visit me in my back yard a few days ago. I knew then that you were fine. I have to say his feathers were a bit ruffled but his song was elegant!

Greetings to Dominique.

I love you, sweet sister Mary.

Hi Mary,
Glad to hear you're doing well. It sounds like such an amazing experience, and you're meeting so many interesting people. I'll be anxious to see you and hear about everything in person. I saw Benji, Erika, and that cute Oscar yesterday. He's gotten so big, and very he's very cute. Buried my mother on Sept.19th. Just trying to get myself on track and refocused. Take care and see you soon. Linda
